What's new in myUSBdrive
The new features in each release, newest first. When a new version is ready, myUSBdrive offers it to you in the app.
6.2.30
Released
- Watch a film on your TV. A TV button in the film player sends the film to a Chromecast at home, and your phone becomes the remote. Safari's AirPlay works at home too. How to watch on your TV
- A warning when the power supply is too weak. If your Pi's power supply can't keep up, the bell tells you and says what to do about it, so a drive that keeps dropping out has an explanation.
- Eject a drive with one click. Each drive on the home page has an Eject button. A full-screen message tells you when it's safe to unplug, or why it can't be ejected yet. Ejecting is only available on your home network, so nobody can take a drive offline while you're away.
- A new home page. Carry on where you left off, see how much space is left, and jump straight to your music, films and photos. Prefer to go straight to your files? Turn it off in Settings > Device.
- The Recycle Bin is easy to find. It sits at the top of your first drive, after your folders, and shows how many files are in it, so getting a deleted file back is one click. It's part of a subscription, and works on your home network.
- Thumbnails for home movies. Home movies and other videos without a film poster now show a picture from the video itself, as Windows does.
- Keep listening while you browse. Minimise the music player and a small bar at the bottom of the page keeps the controls to hand while you look through your files.
- Audiobooks in parts are marked. In a Spoken Word folder, a book split into several files has a folder badge on its cover, so you can tell it apart from a book in a single file.
- A folder type for podcasts. Choose Podcasts under "This folder contains" and a podcast folder works like Spoken Word: it remembers which episode you were on and carries on where you stopped. Its covers are square, and it has a microphone icon.
- A tidier top bar. Clearer menu, and Log out now sits next to the power button instead of hiding at the bottom of the page. The back button says Back, and every Close button is easy to spot.
- A cleaner album page. The cover, album name, artist, track count and running time stay beside the track list as you scroll, with a big Play album button. On a phone it all stacks neatly above the tracks.
- A bigger, clearer music player. Large cover, large play and skip buttons, and the time left in the track, laid out like the Now Playing screen in your car. Drag along the bar to jump to any point. Volume is your phone's or computer's.
- Extra protection away from home. Downloading a file, installing an update or sharing a folder while you're away asks for a code from your authenticator app first. Music, films and photos still play without one. Photos show as a smaller copy, with their location removed, until you enter the code.
- Forgotten your password? The login page now has a Forgotten password link that explains how to get back in, without losing the files on your USB drive.
- Detect Drives tells you what's wrong. If it can't find your drive, it says why and what to do, from a loose cable or a weak power supply to a blank drive or one in a format myUSBdrive can't read.
- Reconnect a drive without restarting. If a drive is unplugged or its cable works loose, plug it back in and click Detect Drives. It comes back with the same name, with no need to restart your Pi.
- New drives are checked first. The first time you plug in a drive, myUSBdrive offers to check it for errors before you copy your files onto it.
- A clear verdict on your SD card. The SD card test in Settings now gives one of three results: Good, Slower than recommended, or Too slow.
- Easier first-time setup. The licence and password boxes stand out, it's clearer that you scroll inside the licence box, and two cards you didn't need on your first visit are gone.
- Settings: the Account tab is now called Password, which is what it's for.
- Your Subscription page takes you straight to your account page, and its Activate links use your Pi's network address, so they work even where myusb.local doesn't. On a Pi without a subscription it shows a short "Already subscribed?" line instead of an activation box you don't need.
- Bug fixes and security updates.
